"Hydrogen occupies a unique position in modern periodic table". Justify the statement

Hydrogen occupies unique position why?

Your answer sir

Hydrogen occupies a unique position in the modern periodic table due to the following reasons -

1)Both hydrogen and alkali metals have a similar outer electronic configuration remember one valence electron.

2) Both hydrogen and halogen have similar outer electronic configurations (both have one electron less than the nearest inert gas configuration)

Therefore, some of the properties of hydrogen resemble halogen and hence, it can be placed in group 17 along with halogens.

3) In some properties it differs from both alkali metals and halogens e.g, the oxide of hydrogen, H2O is neutral butoxide of alkali metals Na2O are basic while halogen oxide is acidic in nature I2O5.
